PROGESTERONE · MEDICATION GUIDE

Progesterone Therapy therapy, a clear guide.

Progesterone is offered as an optional add-on to feminising hormone therapy, typically after at least 12 months on oestrogen. Patients add it for one or more reasons: anecdotal reports of improved mood, better sleep, libido changes, and breast maturation.

OVERVIEW

What progesterone therapy does, in plain English.

We use body-identical micronised progesterone, branded as Utrogestan (Besins Healthcare) or Gepretix (Exeltis). They are clinically equivalent and either may be substituted by your pharmacy.

If side effects from oral dosing are a problem, rectal administration of the same capsules is an option. Cyclical regimens (e.g. 200 mg × 14 days/month) are sometimes used.

SIDE EFFECTS & RISKS

What to watch for, and what to tell us.

Most patients tolerate progesterone well; the main side effect is drowsiness, which is why we recommend taking it at night.
